Hydra is a small team of full-time database engineers. We build in public and release most Hydra projects as permissive open source software. We hail from around the world and our team has worked at Microsoft Azure, Heroku, and Citus Data.Hydra is co-founded by Joe Sciarrino (left) and Jonathan Dance, “JD” (right).
Why is pg_duckdb hosted in DuckDB’s GitHub organization?
We believe that pg_duckdb is foundational project that meaningfully advances the capabilities of PostgreSQL. In the open spirit of PostgreSQL, we hope to collaborate as broadly as possible and avoid commercial conflicts where we can. To do so, Hydra officially donated pg_duckdb to the DuckDB Foundation. The DuckDB Foundation is an independent non-profit that safeguards the long-term maintenance and development of DuckDB and holds most of the intellectual property (IP) of DuckDB and associated projects. The DuckDB Foundation is funded by charitable donations and all collected funds go directly to DuckDB development.Hydra is a commercial open source company. What does that mean? We believe that organizing financially sustainable teams of people to work to manage, push and integrate the project enriches the health of the project and the community.pictured: Hydra cofounder, Joe Sciarrino (left) at DuckDB HQ in Amsterdam, NL with DuckDB cofounders, Hannes Mühleisen (center) and Mark Raasveldt (right).
